Latest “China Bill” Fails to Put Americans First

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator James Lankford (R-OK) issued a statement following the latest version of the “China bill” known as CHIPS Plus passed the Senate:

“America needs to bring manufacturing, especially high-tech manufacturing, home, but this bill ignores critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, and many other national security priorities. Not only does this bill address only one part of the American manufacturing deficiency, it pours federal tax dollars as subsidies into a small group of companies with very little oversight. There are real issues we need to address to ensure American dominance over China, but this bill attempts to manage our economy from Washington, DC rather than determining what has driven companies away from the United States and solving our manufacturing issues.”

In the many versions of the United States Innovation and Competition Act of 2021, now CHIPS Plus, Lankford has advocated for real solutions to ensure American dominance instead of reliance on China including US mineral and energy independence, human rights in Hong Kong and Xinjiang, and military strength in the Indo-Pacific. Lankford introduced legislation to establish secure supply chain of critical minerals to counter China’s market dominance by leveraging the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) partnership, which includes the US, Australia, India, and Japan.
