OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The Office of Senator James Lankford (R-OK) today released an episode of Lankford’s podcast, The Breakdown with James Lankford. Lankford discusses the history of the United States’ relationship with the Kurdish people, President Trump’s decision to withdraw American troops from Syria, and the relationship between Turkey and the Kurds.
Earlier this month, Lankford spoke on the Senate Floor to discuss the current situation, specifically as it relates the Kurdish people, US military operations in the region to fight ISIS, and our increasingly strained alliance with Turkey. Lankford issued a statement supporting President Trump’s announcement to issue sanctions on Turkey amid the aggression in the region and Turkey’s movement toward Russia, particularly with regard to its acquisition of the S-400 missile system from the Russian government. Lankford and a bipartisan group of Senators, who have expressed national security concerns about the integrity of the F-35 joint strike fighter (of which Turkey is a partner country) and its subsequent integration into the S-400 foreign policy conversation, welcomed the news in July 2019 that President Trump had halted the transfer of the F-35 to Turkey, about which the senators introduced a bill earlier this year.
Lankford serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee, Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations and the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
