Senator Lankford Statement on US, Mexico, and Canada Trade Agreement

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator James Lankford (R-OK) issued the following statement on today’s announcement from the Administration on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), formally known as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA):

“Oklahoma and the entire country will benefit from the Trump Administration’s agreement with Mexico and Canada. The decades-old NAFTA agreement needed re-negotiation to provide more markets for our farmers, businesses, and manufacturers. Since Canada and Mexico are the top-two countries for Oklahoma trade, it was especially important to get this deal done quickly and get it done right. This day will have lasting impacts on the economy and families across all of North America.

“For months, members of my staff and I have met with the Administration’s team to emphasize the importance of trade in both countries. Now that the deal is done, I look forward to seeing all the final details before we vote on the trade agreement in a few months. Congress has sole constitutional jurisdiction to regulate trade with foreign nations so it is essential that we and the American people have time to review the full agreement.”

Lankford has encouraged the Administration to resolve trade negotiations as quickly as possible in order to restore certainty and pursue fair trade worldwide. In July, Lankford questioned US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer during an Appropriations Subcommittee hearing after meeting with President Trump on trade the day before. Lankford also released an episode from his podcast called “The Breakdown with James Lankford” focused on trade issues in Oklahoma. In April, Lankford spoke on the Senate floor on free and fair trade and the importance that international trade plays in supporting Oklahoma jobs.
