Senator Lankford Statement on Guatemala

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Senator James Lankford (R-OK) today made the following statement on the corruption investigation within the Guatemalan government:

“President Morales, the Guatemalan government, and the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) have made progress confronting corruption, narcoterrorism and impunity. Protecting the rule of law has helped set a new direction for Guatemala. 

“During the current investigation, it is critical that the process remain transparent so that when it is concluded, the people of Guatemala can trust the final outcome. President Morales’ statement that he will respect the decisions of the other branches of government so the rule of law can prevail is an important commitment. All the facts should come into the light and be heard in an impartial and public forum.   

“Guatemala is an ally and partner of the United States, and I firmly support the ability for its people to live in a free, safe, and corruption-free society. The progress against corruption, including the work of CICIG, should continue unimpeded.”

Lankford has been closely involved with Guatemala for the past several years. Last year, he visited the country to discuss drug trafficking, immigration, and security issues with members of the government. Lankford also visited the country in 2014. In May of this year, Lankford participated in a congressional hearing on foreign aid goals for Guatemala and neighboring countries. In June, Lankford attended the opening of a Guatemalan consulate office in Oklahoma City.

Lankford serves on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Intelligence Committee, and Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs.
