Senator Lankford Meets with Homeland Security Secretary Nominee General John Kelly

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator James Lankford (R-OK) today met with retired General John F. Kelly, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to be the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. 

“Our national security is a priority that we need to take very seriously” said Lankford. “We need a strong leader at the Homeland Security Department, a person who will help protect America against terrorism and secure our borders. It was a pleasure to meet with General John Kelly to learn more about his impressive military experience and his vision for the Department of Homeland Security. His background provides unique insight into some of the challenges the United States faces as it relates to terrorism, immigration and drug trafficking. I look forward to his confirmation hearing, and I am optimistic that he will be confirmed.”

Gen. John Kelly first enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1970, spent four decades in the military, and eventually retired as a four star general. As Commander of U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM), Gen. Kelly oversaw U.S. military operations in Central and South America and the Caribbean.

Lankford serves on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
